We recently completed a trip to Arizona and visited some amazing places, including the Overland Expo, Monument Valley, Dineh (Navajo) Reservation, Hopi Reservation, and more. Thanks Mark and Sharlene for letting us tag along with you on part of this trip.
Land Rover built an awesome 4x4 course for the Expo, and various groups tried running it. Overland Expo put together this series of videos showing various makes of pop-up campers running the course.
You are invited to share a few of these experiences with the E. Clampus Waagus Crew in 2014: We hope to repeat the trip in May 2014, and we hope some of our friends can join us. Generally, I only post photos of me, and not my family and friends, because I am careful about what is posted to the internet, because it is out there forever. Enjoy these photos from our recent trip to Arizona (click to enlarge)!
ABOVE (click to enlarge): Playing with a Hopi child on the Hopi Reservation in Arizona. Mark and I met them at a nearby lake where Mom, Dad, Brother and Sister were fishing. I played with the kids for a while and had a lot of fun. The 2 kids were beautiful and tons of fun to play with. The girl had never had an "Airplane Ride" (pictured above) - photo by Mark.
ABOVE (click to enlarge): I am a huge John Wayne fan, and Monument Valley is John Wayne and John Ford territory. At historic Goulding's Trading Post, there are many monuments (like this one) to the famous filmmakers of Monument Valley. One of our favorite Monument Valley movies is "The Searchers" starring John Wayne and directed by John Ford in Monument Valley in 1952. At Goulding's Trading Post, they show Monument Valley films every night for free, and the night we were there, they were showing "The Searchers", so we got to see it that evening! Awesome. Also, Sue had just bought a book titled "The Searchers" - the Making of an American Legend (published in 2013) that includes massive historical information behind the movie, as well as details of the 2 Johns and the filming of the movie.
Note also that I am wearing a "Waag Brothers Salt Tram" T-shirt, which is available from us for only $16 plus shipping - email me (tim waag at gmail) to order yours in short or long sleeve white, in XL or L.
ABOVE (click to enlarge): Left Mitten at Monument Valley. Even more amazing in person than it is in photos.
ABOVE (click to enlarge): Massive sandstone walls of Monument Valley, with desert flowers in the foreground.
ABOVE (click to enlarge): We bought this petroglyph art on sandstone from Dineh Richard Charley at Canyon de Chelly (pronounced Canyon de Shay). The art depicts Anasazi petroglyphs and pictographs (with Richard's personal spin on them), as well as the only Anasazi Cliff Dwelling that can be visited in the canyon, named the White House (pictured below). Note that I am wearing a hand-me-up t-shirt (as opposed to hand-me-down) from Brian, from Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean!
ABOVE (click to enlarge): White House Cliff Dwelling. Named because of the distinctive white-washing on the upper middle structure (you can barely see it in this photo). In the canyon, there are Cliff Dwelling structures both on the canyon floor, and high up in the sandstone alcoves. White House cliff dwelling is a perfect example of both. Sue and I hiked down to it from the top of the canyon.
We met many interesting people on this trip from around the world, including Lee and Esther at Crazy Horse Campground in Kanan, Pieter and Polina from Germany and Ukraine, Frank and Josie from Germany, Felipe and Patti from Chile and the US, and more whose names we cannot remember. We also had a wonderful visit with my Aunt in the Flagstaff area, as well as a great visit with our friends in Las Vegas - thanks for the wonderful memories!
